Operation Just Cause
The F-117 "Stealth" fighter-bomber's development and testing, as
well as the training of the aircrew, were conducted in the utmost
secrecy. The aircraft first saw combat on December 20, 1989,
during the United States invasion of Panama -- "Operation Just
Cause." On that day, two Nighthawks of the 37th Tactical Fighter
Wing attacked the Rio Hato barracks, each delivering 2000-pound
BLU-109 laser-guided bombs.
The target, which the planes successfully hit, was only 150
meters from barracks full of Panamanian troops. The goal of this
attack was to stun and frighten the troops, not to kill them.
Not long after the airstrike, the Army's 75th Ranger Regiment
parachuted into the area and secured the barracks and a nearby
airstrip.
